Le silence de la mer

Le silence de la mer
The novel, which was published in 1942, depicts a French family who were forced to house a German officer. The family shows their resistance against the German occupier by not speaking to the military man who is residing in their house. The family wanted to demonstrate that they didn’t see him, didn’t hear him, and that he didn’t exist. Vercors invited the French to refuse the German occupation and the betrayal of Pétain.
