The Man Who Planted Trees

The Man Who Planted Trees (l’homme qui plantait des arbres in French)

The Man Who Planted Trees

Giono describes an extraordinary encounter he had when he was very young. He visits Elzéard every year, with the exception of the two wars he will have to fight as a soldier. He will follow the destiny of this solitary man for nearly 40 years. By deciding to reforest a dying countryside, this man worked for Life. He lost his farm on the plains, as well as his only son and his wife. He chose to live isolated from society, preferring the company of his sheep and his dog and a quieter lifestyle. He concluded that this country was suffering from the lack of trees.
