The Plague

The Plague (La Peste in French)

The Plague

Published in 1947, this novel is set in the city of Oran in Algeria. The plague descended upon the city, resulting in the deaths of many people. The state of the plague is still unknown, as the prefecture refuses to worry public opinion. The prefect orders the city gates to be closed after a few weeks. Oran is isolated from the rest of the world, and its inhabitants are entrapped in the plague. Camus compares the plague and war, as well as the rise of Nazism, without quoting either one.

French novel by Albert Camus
