The roots of heaven (Les racines du ciel in French)

The Roots of Heaven
The story takes place in French Equatorial Africa in the 1950s. When the Second World War ended, Western nations resumed their old habits of exploiting the resources of the globe for their own benefit, whatever the consequences. Morel is an idealist who will fight against a cruel world almost alone. He will engage in a fight to save the elephants. Despite these complex issues, the author managed to explain and make his story accessible in this novel, which won the Prix Goncourt in 1956.
