Where to start reading Marcel Proust?

Marcel Proust is a writer who is feared by many, but it is possible to start reading his writings by going little by little. He began writing these short stories (1896) when he was 24 years old, which is 10 years before his great work, In Search of Lost Time. We find the same themes: jealousy, worldliness, pleasure, and snobbishness. It is short and will provide a good starting point. You should discover the stories below:
Violante ou la mondanité
In the captivating tale Violante ou la mondanité, we follow the journey of Violante, a young Viscountess of humble origins. Orphan and provincial, she decides to leave Styria to explore the world. This world is life at the court. Initially viewed with suspicion due to her rural origins, she experiences romantic disappointments that eventually lead her to seek retribution. But in seeking revenge, she will get lost, and she will most certainly never return.
La confession d’une jeune fille
La confession d’une jeune fille is a short story written in the first person, we find the story of a young person who cannot find peace between her deep desires, which she satiates, and the preserved purity requested by his mother. She agrees to marry without wanting to, but to please her mother.
Un dîner en ville
Marcel Proust is very familiar with social events, since he has been immersed in them since he was young. A certain Honoré, who is full of ambition, will describe to us all the guests at this dinner at Madame Fermer. Madame Fermer was the one who invited the different people. They exhibit an elegant demeanor, exhibit exemplary table manners, and above all, refrain from engaging in prolonged discussions. All individuals are diverse, yet all are impacted by the same snobbery. Honoré will not walk away from this dinner unharmed. In essence, un dîner en ville showcases Proust’s ability to transform a seemingly mundane social event into a profound exploration of human nature and society.
La fin de la jalousie
The principal character is once again referred to as Honoré. For a year, Honoré was madly in love with Françoise. This doesn’t stop him from having adventures with other young women. Nevertheless, one day, Monsieur de Buivres shall inform him of certain rumors. Françoise would have one or even several lovers. Honoré is in a state of shock and now believes he has discerned the truth behind Françoise’s deceit. Since he is cheating on her, it is likely that she is also doing the same thing. After projecting his own personality onto that of Françoise, he will commence implementing strategies to induce her to speak. He will begin by admitting to her that he cheated on her, to gauge her reaction. The ending of La fin de la jalousie is unexpected for the protagonist and for us, the readers.
