In the first volume 1, the Iron King (Le Roi de fer), you will discover the origin of this disappearance: a curse launched by the grandmaster of the order of the Templars, Jacques de Molay, who was burned alive in 1314. King Philippe le Bel, reputed to be icy and majestic, is targeted by these last words. He rules France with an iron fist (now you better understand the title).
In 1314, Philippe the Fair, a powerful but aging king, rules France with an iron hand. His reign is marked by political and financial tensions, notably with the Order of the Templars, which he dissolved to seize their wealth. Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Templars, is condemned to the stake. Before dying, he curses the king and his descendants, vowing that the Capetian line will be damned until the thirteenth generation.
Meanwhile, court intrigues escalate. Marguerite of Burgundy, wife of Louis, Philippe’s eldest son and heir to the throne, is embroiled in an adultery scandal with her sisters-in-law, Blanche and Jeanne, in the affair of the Tour de Nesle. This scandal, orchestrated by Isabelle, Philippe’s daughter and Queen of England, tarnishes the royal family and weakens the succession. Marguerite and Blanche are imprisoned, while Jeanne escapes thanks to influential support.
Philippe the Fair, unyielding, seeks to consolidate his power, notably by arranging marriages for his children to secure alliances. However, his health declines, and Molay’s curse seems to take hold: the king dies suddenly at the end of 1314, leaving the throne to his son Louis X, nicknamed the Headstrong, a weak and easily influenced man.
Around the court, ambitious figures maneuver: Robert d’Artois, a scheming and manipulative noble, seeks to reclaim his lands; Mahaut d’Artois, his aunt, fiercely defends her interests; and Guillaume de Nogaret, the king’s advisor, embodies the brutality of the state. These rivalries foreshadow even fiercer power struggles.
